Na twee jaar middelbare school besloot Gerardo zijn geluk te gaan beproeven in de Verenigde Staten. Toen kon je nog zonder documenten de grens naar de Verenigde Staten passeren. Via vrienden die daar al werkzaam waren had hij snel twee goedbetaalde banen maar het luxeleven nam hem dat ook zo weer af.

Zijn vader werd ziek en hij werd teruggeroepen naar Mexico. Een ver familielid nam hem in de leer om met blik te werken waardoor hij de kost voor pa, ma en de andere 5 kinderen kon verdienen. Hij bleek gouden handen te hebben en ontwikkelde zich tot een uitmuntende vakman. Al zijn producten zijn 100% handwerk. Soldeerbout, passer, schaar en ponsjes zijn de en enige gereedschappen waar hij mee werkt.
